Unlocking legaltech potential: Key user analytics metrics to drive adoption

Understanding user behavior through data analytics is essential for driving legaltech adoption and maximizing ROI in law firms.

In today’s evolving legal landscape, law firms are increasingly turning to technology to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and deliver superior client services. However, just implementing legal technology and tracking raw data is not enough. Understanding how users interact with these tools using data analysis is crucial for ensuring successful adoption and maximizing return on investment.

This blog post explores why user analytics are vital for legaltech adoption and outlines key adoption metrics that law firms can use to measure and improve adoption rates in Legatics.

The importance of understanding user behavior in legaltech adoption

At Legatics, we understand the importance and power of data for Innovation Teams and Legal Technology Managers at law firms. We have developed a self-service Admin System for internal teams to manage their instance of Legatics and extract data for analysis.

Insights from the data in the Admin System can be used to:

  1. Identify adoption barriers: By analyzing user behavior, law firms can pinpoint obstacles that hinder technology adoption. This insight allows for targeted interventions, whether it’s additional training, improvements, or feature enhancements.
  2. Personalize user experience: User data helps in tailoring the technology to meet specific needs of different user groups within the firm, enhancing overall user satisfaction and productivity.
  3. Demonstrate ROI: Concrete usage data provides tangible evidence of the technology’s impact, helping justify investments and renewals to stakeholders and encouraging further adoption.
  4. Continuous improvement: Regular analysis of user behavior informs ongoing development, ensuring the technology evolves in line with user needs and industry trends.
  5. Identify “superusers” and product champions: By analyzing repeat matter creators and users with high matter activity, law firms can find product champions to promote Legatics and surface real-world case studies to share to encourage adoption.

Key metrics for measuring legal tech adoption with Legatics

Legal technology companies and law firms typically use a combination of quantitative and qualitative metrics to gauge adoption. We’ve set out below some of the most common that we see with customers at Legatics. By using data downloads from our Admin System and PowerBi, customers can create performance dashboards to measure and improve adoption rates.

  • Daily/Monthly Active Users (DAU/MAU): The number of unique users engaging with the platform on a daily or monthly basis, based on matters viewed by users (these can be split by Members (users at Customer law firms) and Guests (invited third party users).
  • User growth rate: The rate at which new users are onboarded and start using the platform regularly.
  • Retention rate: The percentage of users who continue to use the platform over time, or create repeat matters.
  • Productivity metrics: Measures of how the technology impacts workflow efficiency, such as time saved or increased output. For example, using our Admin App, we can measure the following metrics:
    • Number of matters created over different time periods, which can be split by deal type and office location/lead matter partner
    • How many lists, rows, documents and documents are signed per matter and on average per deal type
